Tessa Charlotte Rampling (born 5 February 1946) is a famous English actress. She started her career as a model in the 1960s. She became well-known for her roles in many European and English films.

Charlotte Rampling has starred in movies like Georgy Girl (1966) and The Night Porter (1974). She also appeared in Stardust Memories (1980) and The Verdict (1982). In the 2000s, she worked often with French director François Ozon. She was in his films Swimming Pool (2003) and Young & Beautiful (2013). On TV, she is known for playing Dr. Evelyn Vogel in the show Dexter (2013).

In 2002, she released a music album called Like a Woman. She has won many awards for her acting. These include the Berlin Film Festival Award for Best Actress and the European Film Award for Best Actress for her role in 45 Years (2015). Tessa Charlotte Rampling was born in 1946 in Sturmer, Essex, England. Her mother, Isabel Anne, was a painter. Her father, Godfrey Rampling, was an Olympic gold medalist in running and a British Army officer.

Charlotte spent much of her early life in different countries. She lived in Gibraltar, France, and Spain. She returned to the United Kingdom in 1964. She went to school in Versailles, France, and at a boarding school in Bushey, England. She had a sister named Sarah. They were very close and even performed a singing act together when they were young.

Career

Charlotte Rampling started acting at age 14. She sang French songs with her sister at a place called Bernays Institute. She began her career as a model. She even appeared in a commercial for Cadbury chocolate.

She was working as a secretary when a casting agent noticed her. She had small, uncredited roles in two films by Richard Lester. These included A Hard Day's Night (1964) with the Beatles. In 1965, she got a role as Meredith in the film Georgy Girl. She also appeared in the comedy Rotten to the Core. In 1967, she starred with Yul Brynner in The Long Duel. She also appeared in the Italian film Sardinia Kidnapped (1968).

On television, Rampling played a character named Hana Wilde in an episode of The Avengers in 1967. In 1969, she starred in the romance-drama Three. In 1972, she played Anne Boleyn in the historical drama Henry VIII and His Six Wives. After these roles, her acting career grew in both English and French movies.

1970s–early 1980s: Hollywood and Italian cinema

Charlotte Rampling appeared in the film Vanishing Point. In 1974, she starred in the science-fiction film Zardoz with Sean Connery. She also worked with Peter O'Toole in Foxtrot (1976) and Richard Harris in Orca (1977).

American audiences began to recognize her. She was the main actress in a popular remake of the detective story Farewell, My Lovely (1975). She starred with Robert Mitchum in this film. Later, she appeared in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories (1980). She also starred in The Verdict (1982), a well-known drama with Paul Newman.

Middle 1980s and 1990s

Rampling starred in the 1984 French film Viva la vie (Long Live Life). She then appeared in the film Max, Mon Amour (1986) and the thriller Angel Heart (1987). For about ten years, she took a break from the public eye.

In the late 1990s, she returned to acting. She appeared in The Wings of the Dove (1997). She also played Miss Havisham in a TV version of Great Expectations (1998). In 1999, she starred in The Cherry Orchard. In 1997, she was a judge at the 54th Venice International Film Festival.

Charlotte Rampling has said that director François Ozon helped her return to filmmaking in the 2000s. She appeared in his film Swimming Pool (2003). The main character in that film was named Sarah Morton.

Rampling also appeared in Spy Game (2001) with Robert Redford. She was nominated for a César Award for her roles in Under the Sand (2000), Swimming Pool (2003), and Lemming (2005). She also starred in Heading South (2005).

The video game designer Hideo Kojima used Rampling's look for a character called The Boss in his game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004).

The actress played Countess Spencer in The Duchess (2008). She also played the High Priestess in the movie Babylon A.D.. In 2002, she released a music album called Comme Une Femme, which means As A Woman. It had songs and spoken parts in both French and English. In 2006, Rampling was chosen to be the head of the jury at the 56th Berlin International Film Festival.

In 2010, Charlotte Rampling filmed Cleanskin, a thriller movie. She also played Miss Emily in the fantasy film Never Let Me Go. She appeared as Helena in the dance movie StreetDance 3D. In 2011, she played Elizabeth Hunter in The Eye of the Storm. She also appeared in Lars Von Trier's film Melancholia.

For her role in the 2012 TV miniseries Restless, Rampling was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. In 2013, she played Dr. Evelyn Vogel in the eighth season of Dexter. Rampling also appeared in the dramas Young & Beautiful and Night Train to Lisbon. Other TV roles include Broadchurch (2015) and London Spy (2015). In 2014, she became the new face for NARS Cosmetics.

In 2015, Rampling starred with Tom Courtenay in 45 Years. This film is about a couple getting ready for their 45th wedding anniversary. She won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival for this role. She also won the European Film Award for Best Actress. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for 45 Years.

That same year, Rampling supported a children's fairytales app called GivingTales. This app helped raise money for UNICEF. Other famous people like Roger Moore and Stephen Fry also supported it.

In 2017, Rampling co-starred in The Sense of an Ending. Her next film was Hannah. In this movie, she played the main role of a wife whose husband is in prison. For her performance, she won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress award at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. In 2017, Rampling also starred in Euphoria.

2020s

In 2019, Charlotte Rampling was cast as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam in the 2021 film Dune. She played this role again in the sequel, Dune: Part Two (2024). Rampling was actually considered for a different role in an earlier Dune movie project in the 1970s.

Rampling also plays a grandmother in the 2021 comedy film Juniper.

In 1972, Charlotte Rampling married Bryan Southcombe, an actor. They had a son named Barnaby Southcombe, who became a TV director. They divorced in 1976.

In 1978, Rampling married French composer Jean-Michel Jarre. They had a son named David Jarre, who is a musician and magician. She also helped raise her stepdaughter, Émilie Jarre, who is a fashion designer. Charlotte and Jean-Michel divorced in 2002.

From 1998 until his death in 2015, Rampling was engaged to Jean-Noël Tassez, a French journalist. Charlotte Rampling has lived in Paris, France, since the late 1970s.
