Life and Career
Early Life and First Camera
Claude Lelouch was born in Paris, France. His father came from an Algerian Jewish family. His mother became Jewish. Claude Lelouch shared that movies saved his life when he was very young. During World War II, his mother would hide him in movie theaters. This was because the Gestapo, a secret police force, was looking for Jewish people.
When he was older, his father bought him a camera. This happened after he didn't pass an important school exam called the baccalaureate. He started his career by making short films called reportage. One of his first projects was filming daily life in the Soviet Union. He hid his camera under his coat to capture real moments. He also filmed exciting sports events. These included the 24 Hours of Le Mans car race and the Tour de France bicycle race.
Filmmaking in the Army and First Films
Lelouch served in the French Army. He worked in their film unit. During this time, he made over 100 short films. He left the army in 1960.
His first full-length movie as a director was Le Propre de l'homme. Critics did not like it at all. One famous film magazine even wrote, "Claude Lelouch, remember this name well, because you will not hear it again." But things changed for him with A Man and a Woman. This movie was a huge success.
Famous Works and Collaborations
Many people consider his 1981 musical movie, Les Uns et les Autres, to be his best work. Claude Lelouch has now made about 50 films.
He made a short film in 1976 called C'était un rendez-vous. In this film, a car appears to be driven very fast through the streets of Paris early in the morning. The whole film is shot from inside the car. Claude Lelouch later said he drove his own Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 for the film. He added the sound of a different, faster sports car to make it more exciting.
Lelouch worked with composer Francis Lai many times, over two dozen films! They created a very popular theme song for A Man and a Woman. This song was sung by Nicole Croisille and Pierre Barouh. More than 300 different versions of this song have been made.
Modern Remake of a Classic
In 2020, Claude Lelouch made a new version of his 1976 short film, C'était un rendez-vous. This new film is called Le Grand Rendez-vous. It was made with Ferrari. This time, it was filmed in Monaco instead of Paris. The star of the film was Charles Leclerc, a racing driver from Monaco. The filming happened on the Circuit de Monaco race track. Leclerc drove a Ferrari SF90 Stradale in the movie. It was released in June 2020.
Some critics did not like the new film as much as the original. For example, a writer for Top Gear said it was "lazy and badly executed."
Honors and Awards
Claude Lelouch has received many important honors and awards for his work.
- 2016: He was made a Commander in the Order of the Crown in Belgium.
- 2005: He received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
His film A Man and a Woman won the Palme d'Or at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival. This is one of the highest awards a film can win. As mentioned earlier, it also won two Oscars.
His 1967 film, Vivre pour vivre, was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. In 1971, he won the David di Donatello award for Best Foreign Directing for his movie Le Voyou.
