Proposed Uranium Mine
Retortillo has been in the news because of a plan to open a Uranium mine nearby. Uranium is a special metal used to make fuel for nuclear power plants, which create electricity.
The Mining Company
The company that wants to build this mine is called Berkeley Minera. It is an Australian mining company. They have proposed to dig for uranium in the area around Retortillo.
Why People Are Concerned
The proposed mine is only about 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) from the border with Portugal. Because of this, many people and groups from both Spain and Portugal are worried. They have held protests to show they do not want the mine to be built.
One reason for their concern is a past event in Spain. Twenty years before these protests, there was a mining disaster known as the Doñana disaster. This event caused a lot of environmental damage. People are worried that a new mine could cause similar problems for the environment and local communities.
Government Involvement
The government of Portugal has also shown its concern. It has asked the Spanish government to have a meeting to discuss the proposed uranium mine and its possible effects.
