Retrop is a small community in Oklahoma, United States. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of a larger county.
Where is Retrop Located?
Retrop is found right on the border between two counties: Washita County and Beckham County. You can find it where two main roads meet: State Highway 6 and SH-55.
How Retrop Got Its Name
The name "Retrop" has a fun story! It comes from the first postmaster, a person named Ira J. Porter. If you spell "Porter" backwards, you get "Retrop."
The Original Retrop
The community you see today isn't exactly where Retrop first started. The original spot, sometimes called "Old Retrop," is about a mile south and a mile east of the current location. It's in Washita County, close to the Retrop Cemetery.
The First Post Office
Old Retrop used to have its own post office. It opened on January 12, 1900. However, it didn't stay open for very long. The post office closed on February 28, 1905.
