Reuben Cotter was born on December 28, 1998. He is an Australian professional rugby league player. He plays mainly as a lock or prop forward. Reuben is the captain for the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League (NRL). He also plays for Australia in international games. He has also played for Queensland in the State of Origin series. Earlier in his career, he played as a hooker.

He started playing junior rugby league for the Sarina Crocs. He went to Sarina State High School. In 2011, he was the captain for the Central Queensland team. He later joined the North Queensland Cowboys academy.

Reuben's Rugby League Journey

Early Playing Days

In 2013 and 2014, Reuben played for the Mackay Cutters' junior team. In February 2014, he played for the Queensland Murri under-16 team. They won against New South Wales. In May 2014, he captained the Queensland under-16 team. They also won against New South Wales.

In 2015, Cotter moved up to the Cutters' Mal Meninga Cup team. Later that year, he was chosen for the Queensland under-18 team. They beat New South Wales. In September 2015, Cotter was picked for the Australian Schoolboys team. He scored a try in their big win against New Zealand.

In 2016, Cotter joined the North Queensland Cowboys under-20 team. He played only two games before he got a serious knee injury (ACL tear). This meant he couldn't play for the rest of the season. In 2017, he injured his ACL again. Because of this, he missed all of the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Starting in the NRL (2019)

In 2019, Cotter joined the North Queensland Cowboys NRL team as a development player. On February 23, he played his first game in almost two years. This was a trial game against the Gold Coast Titans. Cotter started the 2019 season playing for the Mackay Cutters. He scored nine tries in 15 games for them.

In Round 13 of the 2019 NRL season, Cotter played his first NRL game. It was for the North Queensland Cowboys against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. He played five games in his first season, all coming off the bench. On September 4, Cotter signed a new contract with the Cowboys for one more year.

Playing More Games (2020)

Cotter started the 2020 season playing for the Mackay Cutters. He scored two tries in one game. He then returned to the North Queensland team in Round 5. He played four games from the bench. In Round 15, he started as a hooker for the first time. He finished the season as the team's starting hooker. He played six games in that position.

On September 30, Cotter signed a new contract with the North Queensland team. This contract was until the end of the 2022 season.

Challenges and Success (2021-2022)

In the 2021 NRL season, Cotter played only six games for the North Queensland club. The team finished 15th on the ladder that year.

In June 2022, Cotter was chosen to play in Game One of the 2022 State of Origin series. Queensland won that game. Cotter played 18 matches for North Queensland in the 2022 NRL season. The team finished third and made it to the finals. Cotter played in both finals matches. He scored a try in their preliminary final loss to Parramatta.

In October 2022, he was named in the Australia squad for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. He played two games in the tournament.

Winning Awards and Continued Success (2023-2025)

Cotter played in all three games of the 2023 State of Origin series. He won the Wally Lewis Medal for being the best player of the series. Cotter played 20 games for North Queensland in the 2023 NRL season. The team finished 11th on the ladder.

In 2024, Cotter was named in the starting team for Queensland in Game One of the 2024 State of Origin series. On September 2, 2024, it was announced that Cotter signed a new contract.
