Reuvein Margolies (Hebrew: ראובן מרגליות) was a very smart Israeli author and scholar. He was born on November 30, 1889, and passed away on August 28, 1971. He was known for his deep knowledge of Jewish texts and for leading an important library called the Rambam Library.
His Early Life
Reuvein Margolies was born in 1889 in a city called Lemberg. Today, this city is known as Lviv and is in Ukraine. When he was born, Lemberg was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Later, from 1918 to 1940, it was part of Poland. In 1934, he moved to Israel and made his home in Tel Aviv.
What He Wrote
Reuvein Margolies wrote more than 55 books about Jewish topics. He had an amazing memory, almost like a camera! This helped him know a lot about many different Jewish writings. He was an expert in the written Bible and the Oral Torah. The Oral Torah includes the Talmud and its explanations. He also knew a lot about Kabbalah, which includes books like the Zohar.
He wrote about many different subjects, including the mystical ideas of Kabbalah. He also wrote detailed biographies about important Jewish leaders. Some of these leaders include Maharsha, Ohr Ha-Chaim Hakodosh, Noam Elimelech, Rabbi Moses ben Nachman (Ramban), and Rabbi Yechiel of Paris.
Awards He Received
In 1957, Reuvein Margolies received a very special award called the Israel Prize. This award is one of the highest honors in Israel. He won it for his important work on Rabbinical literature, which means his studies and writings about Jewish law and teachings.
