Reward is a fascinating place in Inyo County, California, that used to be a busy mining town. Today, it's known as a "ghost town" because most people have moved away, leaving behind memories of its past.
Where is Reward Located?
Reward is found in a beautiful but rugged part of California. It's about 9.5 miles (15.3 kilometers) north of a town called Lone Pine. The site sits high up at 3,865 feet (1,178 meters) above sea level, on the west side of the Inyo Mountains.
Why is it Called Reward?
The name "Reward" comes from a mining company that was very active there. This company was called the Reward Consolidated Mining Co. In 1878, they operated a mine in the area called the Eclipse Mine, where they dug for valuable gold and silver.
A Brief History of Reward
For a short time, Reward was a lively place. It even had its own post office! The post office was open from 1900 to 1906. This shows that enough people lived and worked in Reward to need a way to send and receive mail. After 1906, the post office closed, and over time, the town became quiet, turning into the ghost town it is today.
