Reynolds 531 (say "five-three-one") is a special type of steel tubing. It is a brand name owned by Reynolds Technology in the United Kingdom. This strong steel was used for many important things. It helped build race car parts and even pieces for airplanes. But it was most famous for making bicycle frames.
For many years, Reynolds 531 was seen as the best material for building bicycle frames. Bike builders loved it because they could get tubes in many different sizes and thicknesses. This made it easy to create all sorts of bikes.

What is Reynolds 531?
Reynolds 531 is a special type of alloy steel. This means it's a mix of different metals. It mainly contains manganese and molybdenum, along with carbon. This mix makes the steel very strong and light.
It was first made in 1935. For a long time, it was one of the best materials for making strong, light bicycle frames.
Why was it so popular?
One big reason Reynolds 531 was so popular was its flexibility. Bike makers could choose from a huge range of tube sizes. This included different thicknesses and shapes for various parts of a bike frame. Reynolds also made special tubes for certain bike companies.
They even created complete "sets" of tubes for different kinds of cycling. For example, there was 531c for racing bikes and 531st for touring bikes. This wide choice meant 531 stayed popular even when newer, more advanced steels came out.
How it changed over time
Over the years, new ways of building bikes became common. One of these was TIG welding and MIG welding. These methods use very high heat to join metal parts. Unfortunately, Reynolds 531 didn't work well with these high temperatures. Because of this, it slowly stopped being used for new bikes.
Today, Reynolds 531 is usually only made if someone places a special order.
What replaced Reynolds 531?
Other types of steel tubing have taken the place of Reynolds 531. Two common ones are Reynolds 520 and Reynolds 525. These are made from a different mix of metals called Chrome-Molybdenum steel. They are very similar to 531 but can be welded more easily.
- Reynolds 520 is often used for modern "fixie" bikes. These are simple bikes often used in cities.
- Reynolds 525 has thicker tubes in some places. It is often used for bikes like cyclo-cross bikes or touring bikes, which need to be extra strong.
Reynolds Technology has also created even newer and stronger tubes. These include Reynolds 753 and 853. They even make stainless steel tubes for bikes, called 925 and 953. These newer materials are even lighter and stronger than 531.
