Rheems is a small community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it is called an "unincorporated community" and a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's a place the government counts for population, but it's part of a larger township.

Rheems is located between two other towns: Elizabethtown and Mount Joy. In 2010, about 1,598 people lived there. By 2020, the population grew to 2,253 people.

Where is Rheems Located?

Rheems is in the western part of Lancaster County. It is mostly in West Donegal Township. A small part of Rheems, north of Harrisburg Avenue, is in Mount Joy Township.

  • Mount Joy is about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast.
  • Lancaster, the main city of the county, is about 16 miles (26 km) southeast.

The area of Rheems is about 1.43 square miles (3.7 square kilometers). A very small part of this area is water. Rheems has small streams that flow into Donegal Creek. This creek then joins Chiques Creek before flowing into the Susquehanna River.

What is the Quarry Controversy?

A company called R.E. Pierson Materials has a quarry in Rheems. A quarry is a large pit where stone or other materials are dug out of the ground. Recently, the company has faced some disagreement. They want to make their quarry bigger by expanding it into 30 acres (about 12 hectares) of farmland in Rheems. This plan has caused some debate in the community.
