Rhinella jimi is a type of toad that lives in northeastern Brazil. It's also known as Jimi's toad. This toad was officially described in 2002, but before that, people often confused it with another similar toad called Rhinella schneideri. The name jimi was chosen to honor a Brazilian scientist named Jorge Jim, who studies reptiles and amphibians.
What Does Jimi's Toad Look Like?
Jimi's toad is a big, strong-looking toad. Adult male toads are usually about 14.7 centimeters (about 5.8 inches) long from their nose to their bottom. This measurement is called "snout–vent length." Females are a bit smaller, around 13.4 centimeters (about 5.3 inches). The largest male ever found was 17.1 centimeters (about 6.7 inches) long.
This toad has a clear eardrum, which is called a tympanum. Its head has many bony ridges, known as cranial crests. Behind its eyes, it has special glands called parotoid glands that follow these ridges. These glands can release a milky substance that helps protect the toad from predators.
Male toads have strong front legs, while females have thinner ones. Their fingers do not have any webbing between them. Their back legs are short and sturdy. Their toes have a bit of skin between them at the base, and they have fringes along the edges.
The skin on the toad's back is covered with many bumps of different sizes, called tubercles. Male toads also have hard, spiky bumps, called keratinized spines, on their back, sides, and the top of their legs. When these toads are preserved, they look grayish-beige on top with dark brown spots. Their parotoid glands might look a bit more orange. The underside of the toad is a lighter beige color. The head is very dark, ranging from brown to almost black.
Where Does Jimi's Toad Live?
Rhinella jimi is a very common toad. It lives in many different places, including:
- Forests that are growing back after being cut down (secondary forests)
- Grassy areas with scattered trees (like a savanna)
- Farm lands
- Other open areas or places where humans have changed the environment
You can find these toads at different heights, up to 800 meters (about 2,600 feet) above sea level. They lay their eggs and have their babies in both ponds that always have water and ponds that dry up sometimes.
Is Jimi's Toad in Danger?
Even though some people use parts of this toad for traditional beliefs, it is not currently facing any big threats. It is a very common species and lives in many protected areas, which helps keep its populations safe.
