Rhodri ab Idwal was a prince from the Kingdom of Gwynedd in the 900s. He belonged to the House of Aberffraw, a very important royal family in Wales. He lived during the 10th century and passed away around the year 970.
Early Life and Family
Rhodri was one of six children of Idwal the Bald, who was the King of Gwynedd. Sadly, King Idwal and his brother Elissed were killed around 943 during an invasion by the English.
After King Idwal's death, his kingdom did not go to his children right away. Instead, it was taken over by Hywel the Good, who was the King of Deheubarth, another Welsh kingdom.
A Fight for the Kingdom
When King Hywel the Good died, Rhodri and his brothers decided to fight for their family's right to rule Gwynedd. They rebelled against the new king, Owain ap Hywel Dda, who was Hywel's son. This was a time of many changes and struggles for power in Wales.
His Death
Rhodri's death was a tragic event. Old Welsh records, like the Annals of Wales, mention that he was murdered. Some historians believe this happened around the year 969.
Another old book, the Chronicle of the Princes, says he was killed in 966. This book states that Irish people from Anglesey were responsible for his murder.
Revenge for Rhodri
After Rhodri's death, his brother Iago ab Idwal sought revenge. He attacked the Irish at a place called Aberffraw. Iago then chased them completely out of Gwynedd.
Some historians believe that Rhodri's death led to more fighting among his brothers. Even though his older brothers, Iefan ab Idwal and Iago, became kings, the family faced many challenges after Rhodri was gone.
