Idwal Foel facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Idwal Foel (which means Idwal the Bald) was an important king in Wales during the 900s. He was also known as Idwal ab Anarawd, meaning Idwal son of Anarawd. Idwal ruled the kingdom of Gwynedd. He was part of a powerful family called the House of Aberffraw. He became king after his father, Anarawd ap Rhodri, passed away. Some old writings even called him "King of the Britons."

Life as a King

Idwal became the king of Gwynedd around the year 916. This happened after his father, Anarawd, died. Idwal soon made an alliance with Æthelstan of England. Æthelstan became the King of England in 924.

Working with Æthelstan

King Æthelstan wanted to show his power across all of Britain. So, King Idwal showed his respect by visiting the English court. He went there in 927, 928, and 937. During his first visit, Idwal signed important agreements. He promised to join Æthelstan in battles against the Scots.

That same year, Idwal marched with other Welsh leaders. These included Hywel Dda from Deheubarth and Morgan ab Owain from Gwent. They went to fight against Owain ap Dyfnwal. Owain was the King of Strathclyde. Owain was defeated and had to accept Æthelstan's rule.

Challenges and End of Reign

King Æthelstan died in 939. His half-brother, Edmund, became the new King of England. In 942, King Idwal became worried. He thought the English might help Hywel Dda take over his kingdom.

So, Idwal and his brother, Elisedd, attacked the English (Saxons) in Wales. But their attack did not succeed. Old records say that "Idwal and his brother Elisedd are killed in battle against the Saxons."

After Idwal's death, his sons, Iago and Ieuaf, should have become kings. However, Hywel Dda invaded Gwynedd. He forced Idwal's sons out of the kingdom. Hywel ruled Gwynedd for eight years. After that, Idwal's sons were able to return and reclaim their rightful place as kings.
