Iago ab Idwal facts for kids
Iago ab Idwal was a powerful leader who ruled as the King of Gwynedd from 950 to 979. He might have also been a ruler in Powys, another part of Wales.
Iago was the son of an earlier king named Idwal the Bald. When his father died in a battle in 942, Iago's uncle, Hywel the Good, took over Gwynedd. But when Hywel died in 950, Iago and his brother, Ieuaf, fought to get their kingdom back.

Reclaiming the Kingdom
Iago and Ieuaf successfully drove out their cousins at the Battle of Carno. This victory helped them take back control of their kingdom.
Continuing Conflicts
Even after winning, the fighting didn't stop.
- In 952, Iago and Ieuaf's forces raided lands as far south as Dyfed.
- In 954, their cousins raided north into the Conwy Valley.
- The southern princes were finally defeated at the Battle of Llanrwst. They were then chased back to Ceredigion.
Brothers' Quarrel and Iago's Rule
After their victories, Iago and Ieuaf started to disagree and fight among themselves.
Iago Takes Control
In 969, Iago captured his brother Ieuaf. Iago then ruled Gwynedd alone for another ten years.
End of Iago's Reign
In 979, Ieuaf's son, Hywel, took the throne from Iago. There are no records that tell us what happened to Iago after this.
