Rhyothemis turneri (Kirby, 1894)

The Jewel Flutterer (scientific name: Rhyothemis resplendens) is a beautiful type of dragonfly. Dragonflies are amazing insects known for their bright colors and speedy flying. This special dragonfly gets its name "Jewel Flutterer" because of the shiny, jewel-like blue parts on its wings. It belongs to a family of dragonflies called Libellulidae.

What is the Jewel Flutterer?

The Jewel Flutterer is a small dragonfly. Its body is about 25 millimeters (about 1 inch) long. Its wings can spread out to 40-60 millimeters (about 1.5 to 2.3 inches). Both its front and back wings have bright blue, shiny patches. These patches look like metallic jewels. The markings on its back wings are usually longer than those on its front wings.

This dragonfly is part of a larger group called Rhyothemis. This group of dragonflies lives in many places. You can find them from Africa all the way to the western Pacific Ocean. In Australia, there are five different kinds of Rhyothemis dragonflies.

Where Does It Live?

The Jewel Flutterer lives in Queensland, Australia. You can find it along the coast. Its home stretches from around Mackay up to the northern part of Cape York Peninsula.

Outside of Australia, this dragonfly also lives in other places. It can be found in the Moluccas and New Guinea.

Its Habitat

Jewel Flutterers like to live near water. They can be found near streams and rivers. They also like still water, such as ponds or lakes. These watery places are important for them to live and lay their eggs.

Conservation Status

The Jewel Flutterer has been checked by a group called the IUCN Red List. This group studies animals and plants. They figure out if a species is in danger of disappearing. The Jewel Flutterer is listed as "least concern". This means that, for now, there are plenty of them. They are not currently in danger of becoming extinct.
