Ricardo Bellver was born in Madrid, Spain. He loved art from a young age. He decided to study sculpture.
Early Education in Madrid
Bellver went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. This was a very important art school in Madrid. Here, he learned the basic skills of sculpture.
Studying Art in Rome
After his studies in Madrid, Bellver received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed him to travel to Rome, Italy. Rome was a great place for artists. It was full of ancient and famous sculptures. He finished his art education there.
Famous Works by Ricardo Bellver
Ricardo Bellver is best known for one special sculpture. It is called The Fallen Angel. This artwork is very dramatic and powerful.
The Fallen Angel Sculpture
The Fallen Angel (in Spanish, El Ángel Caído) was created in 1877. Bellver got the idea for this sculpture from a famous poem. The poem is called Paradise Lost by John Milton. It tells the story of Lucifer. Lucifer is an angel who falls from Heaven.
The sculpture shows Lucifer at the moment he is falling. It looks very dramatic and original. In 1878, this sculpture won a top medal. It was at the Spanish National Fine Arts Exhibition.
The Fallen Angel Goes to Paris
In the same year, 1878, a bronze copy of The Fallen Angel was made. This copy was shown at the third Paris World's Fair. This was a huge event where countries showed off their best creations.
A Gift to Madrid
Later, the Prado Museum gave the sculpture to the City of Madrid. In 1885, it was placed in a park. The park is called Retiro Park. It is the biggest park in Madrid.
An architect named Francisco Jareño designed a special base for the statue. It was made of granite, bronze, and stone. The success of The Fallen Angel helped Bellver become a respected artist. He also became the director of the Arts and Works School in Madrid.

Bellver created many other artworks too. You can find some of his sculptures in important buildings in Madrid. These include Saint Francis the Great Basilica and Saint Joseph Church. His works are also in the Pontifical Church of Saint Michael. Some are even in the Ministry of Public Works building.
