Ricardo Macías Picavea was born in Santoña, a town in Cantabria, Spain. His birthday was June 17, 1847.

He earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Arts in 1863. This happened in the city of Valladolid. He then started studying law and philosophy. He went to universities in Madrid and Valladolid. However, he stopped his studies because he had disagreements with the universities.

In 1874, Macías Picavea became a professor. He taught Latin and geography at an institute. He also earned his Ph.D. degree in 1876. A Ph.D. is a very high university degree. He lived in Valladolid for the rest of his life. He passed away there on May 11, 1899.
