About the Rice River

The Rice River is an important part of the natural landscape in Minnesota. It helps carry water across the land and supports many plants and animals.

Where Does the Rice River Flow?

The Rice River starts in southeastern Aitkin County. It begins at the place where water flows out of Porcupine Lake. From there, it generally flows north.

The river then enters the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This is a special area set aside to protect wildlife. After flowing through the refuge, the river turns west. It continues its journey until it reaches the Mississippi River. This meeting point is about 5 miles (8 km) northeast of the town of Aitkin.

How Did the Rice River Get Its Name?

The Rice River gets its name from something very special: wild rice! Long ago, there was a lot of wild rice growing along the riverbanks. This wild rice was an important food source for the Native American people who lived in the area. They harvested the rice, and it became a big part of their diet and culture.
