John Richard Basehart (born August 31, 1914 – died September 17, 1984) was an American actor. He was famous for playing Admiral Harriman Nelson in the TV science-fiction show Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea from 1964 to 1968.
He also played Wilton Knight in the first episode of the TV series Knight Rider (1982). You might recognize his voice as the narrator at the start of every Knight Rider episode. Richard Basehart was also a successful movie actor. He won awards for his roles in films like Fourteen Hours (1951) and Moby Dick (1956).

He was married three times during his life. His first wife, Stephanie Klein, passed away. He then married Italian actress Valentina Cortese. They had one son together, who also became an actor, Jackie Basehart. Richard and Valentina later divorced in 1960. In 1962, he married his third wife, Diana Lotery. They had two children together and remained married until his death.
His Final Years
Richard Basehart passed away in Los Angeles on September 17, 1984, at the age of 70. He had suffered from several strokes. His ashes were buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
Just one month before he died, Richard Basehart narrated a poem. This was during the closing ceremony of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, as the Olympic flame was put out.

Richard Basehart received several awards and nominations for his acting work.
- In 1951, he won the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor for his role in Fourteen Hours.
