Richard Budd (born in 1746, died on September 2, 1821) was an important British physician. A physician is a doctor who helps people stay healthy and treats illnesses.
Early Life and Education
Richard Budd was born in Newbury, Berkshire, England. His father, also named Richard Budd, worked as a banker.
In 1764, Richard Budd began his studies at Balliol College, Oxford, which is a very old and famous university. Later, he moved to Jesus College, Cambridge, another well-known university. There, he earned his first medical degree, called an MB (Bachelor of Medicine), in 1770. Five years later, in 1775, he earned his MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree.
A Doctor in London
Richard Budd first started working as a doctor in his hometown of Newbury. However, in 1780, he decided to move to London. London was a much bigger city with more opportunities for doctors.
On September 30, 1777, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. This means he was recognized as an important and skilled doctor by a leading group of medical professionals.
Important Roles
Richard Budd held many important positions during his career. He was chosen to be a censor several times (in 1780, 1783, 1786, 1789, 1791, and 1798). A censor's job was to make sure other doctors followed the rules and kept high standards.
In 1781, he gave the Goulstonian Lecture. This was a special and important talk given by a respected doctor about a medical topic. From 1799 to 1814, he also served as the treasurer for the College of Physicians, which meant he managed their money.
From 1780 to 1801, Richard Budd worked as a physician at St Bartholomew's Hospital, a famous hospital in London. He also worked as a doctor at Christ's Hospital.
