Sir Richard Edgcumbe was an important English politician who lived a long time ago, from about 1570 to 1639. He came from places in Cornwall called Mount Edgcumbe and Cotehele. He was a member of the English Parliament, which is like a government meeting place, for many years between 1586 and 1629.

Richard was the oldest son of Peter Edgcumbe. His father was also a politician and a very important person in Cornwall. Richard's mother was Margaret Luttrell. Her family came from Dunster Castle in Somerset.

Sir Richard's Political Life

Richard studied law when he was young, starting in 1585. In 1586, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Liskeard. His father was in charge of the town at that time.

He continued his political career. In 1589, he became an MP for Totnes. Then, in 1593, he was elected to represent Grampound.

In 1603, Richard was made a knight. This meant he received the title "Sir." When his father passed away in 1608, Richard inherited the family's lands and wealth.

He continued to serve in Parliament. He was an MP for Bodmin in 1614. Later, he was an MP for Grampound again in 1624. His last time in Parliament was from 1628 to 1629, representing Bossiney. After 1629, King Charles I decided to rule without Parliament for eleven years.

  • His first marriage was in 1602 to Anne Carey. She was the daughter of Sir George Carey, who was an important leader in Ireland. Richard and Anne did not have any children together.
  • In 1608, he married Mary Coteele. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Coteele from London. With Mary, Richard had three sons. One of their sons was named Piers Edgcumbe.

His Final Years

Sir Richard Edgcumbe passed away on March 23, 1639. He was about 68 years old.
