Early Life and Education
Richard Newhouse Jr. was born in Louisville, Kentucky. When he was older, he joined the military. He served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. This was a very important time in history.
After the war, he went to college. He earned two degrees from Boston University. Later, he studied law at the University of Chicago Law School. He became a lawyer, which means he could help people with legal issues.
Political Career
After finishing his education, Newhouse moved to Chicago, Illinois. He worked for a newspaper called The Chicago Defender. He also worked as a lawyer for the government, helping with housing programs.
Richard Newhouse was a member of the Democratic Party. This is one of the main political parties in the United States. From 1967 to 1991, he was a member of the Illinois State Senate. This means he helped make laws for the state of Illinois for 24 years!
In 1975, he made history. Richard Newhouse was the first African American person to run for Mayor of Chicago. The mayor is the leader of a city. Even though he didn't win that election, it was a very important step for many people. He ran against the mayor at the time, Richard J. Daley.
Later Life
Richard Newhouse passed away in 2002 at his home in Hyde Park, Illinois. He was 78 years old. He is remembered for his long service in the Illinois Senate and for his historic run for mayor.
