Sir Richard Herbert (died 1510) was a Welsh knight and important figure. He lived in Ewyas, Herefordshire. He was a gentleman, a landowner, and worked at the royal court.
Richard was the son of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke. His mother was Maud ap Howell Graunt. Richard also had a brother named George.
It's important not to confuse Richard Herbert of Ewyas with his uncle, Sir Richard Herbert of Coldbrook.

Richard Herbert's Family Legacy
Richard Herbert was a very important person in his family's history. Even though he was not the oldest son to inherit titles, his descendants became famous. Many important families in Britain today come from him.
Early Life and Land Grants
In 1465, Richard Herbert received many lands. These included Westminster and manors like Grove and Radnore. These lands were mostly in Herefordshire. At this time, he was known as an Esquire.
Working for the King
Richard Herbert worked for King Henry VII. He was a Gentleman Usher, which meant he helped the King in his court. This was an important job.
In 1509, he was given another important role. He became the Constable and Porter of Abergavenny Castle. This meant he was in charge of the castle.
Was He Knighted?
There is some discussion about whether Richard Herbert was truly a knight. Some records show a Richard Herbert being knighted in 1513. However, this was after his death.
Other sources call him "Sir Richard Herbert." One article says he was knighted by King Henry VIII. If this is true, it would have happened in 1509 or 1510. This was the very beginning of King Henry VIII's rule.
Richard Herbert's Marriage
Richard Herbert married Margaret Cradock. Margaret was the daughter of Sir Matthew Cradock of Swansea. Her mother was Alice Mancell.
Through Margaret, Richard gained control of Castleston Castle. This castle became part of their family's property.
Richard Herbert's Children
Richard and Margaret Herbert had three sons who grew up. One of their sons was William Herbert (1501–1570). He became the Earl of Pembroke in 1551.
Famous Descendants
Many noble families today are descendants of Sir Richard Herbert. These include later Earls of Pembroke and Montgomery. The Earls of Carnarvon also come from his line.
Richard's son William married Anne Parr. Anne was the sister of Queen Catherine Parr. Catherine was the last wife of King Henry VIII.
William Herbert served King Henry VIII in many ways. He was a trusted advisor and helped manage the King's money. He was knighted in 1544 and became a Knight of the Garter.
Another son was Sir George Herbert of Swansea. His family line, the Herberts of Swansea, continued for many years. Candleston Castle passed to George from his parents.
Richard Herbert's Death
Richard Herbert passed away in September 1510. He was buried in Abergavenny Church. His tomb has beautiful decorations and a statue of him.
