Richard Dale Jenkins, born on May 4, 1947, is an American actor. He is well-known for playing Nathaniel Fisher in the TV show Six Feet Under from 2001 to 2005. He started his acting career in theater in 1974. Since the 1980s, he has worked in many movies and TV shows, often playing supporting roles.
Some of his famous movies include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Burn After Reading (2008), Step Brothers (2008), and The Cabin in the Woods (2012).
Jenkins was nominated for an Academy Award for his main role in the movie The Visitor (2007). He won an Emmy Award for his role in the TV series Olive Kitteridge (2014). He also received nominations for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for his acting in the fantasy movie The Shape of Water (2017).

Richard Jenkins was born and grew up in DeKalb, Illinois. His mother, Mary Elizabeth, was a housewife, and his father, Dale Stevens Jenkins, was a dentist. He went to DeKalb High School.
Before becoming an actor, Jenkins worked driving a linen truck. He studied drama at Illinois Wesleyan University. After college, he moved to Rhode Island.

Starting in Theater
Jenkins began his acting journey with the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island. He got his first small part in a TV movie called Feasting with Panthers in 1974. He quickly joined the Screen Actors Guild, which is a union for actors. He continued to be a part of the Trinity acting company and was even its artistic director from 1990 to 1994.

Since his first TV movie in 1974, Jenkins has appeared in many films. Some of his early movies include Silverado (1985), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), and The Witches of Eastwick (1987).
He has worked with the famous director brothers, the Farrelly brothers, in movies like There's Something About Mary (1998) and Me, Myself & Irene (2000). He also appeared in three movies by the Coen brothers: The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), and Burn After Reading (2008).
While he is mostly known for supporting roles, Jenkins played the main character in The Visitor (2007). For this role, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also won the International Press Academy's Satellite Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture.
In 2010, Jenkins was in Dear John, playing the father of the main character. He also acted alongside Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love.
