Richard Lumley, 1st Viscount Lumley (born April 7, 1589 – died March 12, 1663) was an English nobleman. He was a strong supporter of the King during the English Civil War. He also served as a military leader. His grandson, also named Richard Lumley, later became the first Earl of Scarbrough.

Early Life and Family

Richard Lumley was born in 1589. He was baptized on July 7, 1589, in a place called Chester-le-Street in County Durham, England. His father was Roger Lumley, and his mother was Anne Kurtswich.

Richard came from an important family. His great-grandfather, Richard Lumley, 3rd Baron Lumley, was a nobleman who was part of Parliament in 1509.

A Loyal Supporter of the King

Richard Lumley was very loyal to the King during the English Civil War. This war was a big conflict in England between those who supported the King (called Royalists) and those who supported Parliament.

Richard turned his family home, Lumley Castle, into a military base. This meant it was used to house soldiers and store weapons. He became a main commander under Prince Rupert of the Rhine, who was a famous military leader for the King.

Richard fought in battles in the west of England. He was part of the Siege of Bristol. A siege is when an army surrounds a city or castle to try and take control of it. Richard stayed there until Prince Rupert surrendered the city in 1645.

Titles and Honors

Because of his loyalty to the King, Richard Lumley received special honors.

  • On July 19, 1616, King James made him a knight at Theobalds House. Being knighted was a great honor.
  • On July 12, 1628, he was given the title Viscount Lumley of Waterford. This was a noble title in the Peerage of Ireland, which is a system of noble ranks.
  • On April 25, 1660, Richard Lumley was one of the loyal supporters who spoke in Parliament. They declared their support for the King's Declaration of Breda. This declaration was a promise from the King about how he would rule after the war.

Family Life

Richard Lumley married Frances Shelley. She was the daughter of Henry Shelley from Warminghurst Park.

Their daughter, Julia, married Sir Christopher Conyers, 2nd Baronet. Richard and Frances also had a son named John Lumley. Sadly, John passed away before his father in 1658.

Richard Lumley married a second time in 1630 to Elizabeth Sandys. She was also known as Elizabeth Cornwallis. In 1657, Elizabeth helped start a grammar school in Pickering. This school is still open today and is called Lady Lumley's School.

When Richard Lumley passed away, his grandson inherited his title as Viscount Lumley. This grandson later became the first Earl of Scarbrough in 1690.
