The Richard Mansfield House is a very old and special home in Ansonia, Connecticut. It was built a long time ago, around the year 1700. This house is important because it's one of the oldest buildings still standing in Ansonia. It's also famous for its connection to a very early church leader named Richard Mansfield. Because of its history, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The Richard Mansfield House is in a quiet neighborhood in Ansonia. It sits close to the street, with a low stone wall in front. It's a great example of old American homes.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is two and a half stories tall. It's made of wood and has a pointed roof. A stone chimney sticks out from the roof. The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards. The back of the roof slopes down very far, almost to the ground. This gives the house a special shape called a saltbox. It looks a bit like the old wooden boxes used to store salt!

The front of the house has five windows lined up neatly. The main door is right in the middle. The sides of the roof stick out a little bit, making the house look even more interesting. Inside, some parts of the house are still original, like the old fireplace.

Who Was Richard Mansfield?

The house was bought for Reverend Richard Mansfield in 1748. He was born in New Haven. Richard Mansfield grew up in a different church, but he later joined the Church of England. He then started a church mission in Derby. Ansonia was actually part of Derby back then!

During the American Revolutionary War, Richard Mansfield supported the British king. Because of this, he had to leave his home for a while. But he came back after the war. He continued to lead the local church until he passed away in 1820.

Where Did the House Originally Stand?

The Richard Mansfield House was not always in its exact spot. In 1926, the house was carefully moved across the street. This was done to make room for a new church building that stands there today. Even after being moved, the house remains a key part of Ansonia's history.
