The Richard Peacon House, also known as the Octagon House, is a special historic home in Key West, Florida. You can find it at 712 Eaton Street in the Old Town area. This unique house was built around 1885.
It was built for Richard Peacon (1840-1914). He owned a very important grocery store in Key West. Later, he even helped start a bank called the Island City National Bank.
What Makes This House Special?
The Richard Peacon House is one of only two eight-sided houses in Key West. The other one is nearby at 620 Dey Street. This might make the Peacon House the southernmost eight-sided house in the entire continental United States!
Famous Owners
In 1980, a very famous fashion designer named Calvin Klein bought the house. He owned it for seven years, selling it in 1987. The house was also shown in a book called Key West Gardens and Their Stories in 2000.
About Richard Peacon
Richard Peacon was born in Key West on August 21, 1840. His parents came from the Bahamas. In 2006, the house and the Peacon family's connection to the Bahamas were mentioned in another book. This book was called Preserving Paradise: The Architectural Heritage of the Florida Keys.
