Richard Sui On Chang (born November 30, 1941 – died August 30, 2017) was an important religious leader. He served as the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii from 1997 to 2006. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in some Christian churches.

Early Life and Education

Richard Chang was born in Honolulu, which was then called the Territory of Hawaii. This happened on November 30, 1941.

He went to Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, in 1966, he received a Master of Divinity degree. This advanced degree is for people studying to become religious leaders.

Becoming a Priest

In 1966, Richard Chang took important steps in his religious journey. On March 5, he became a deacon. A deacon is a minister who helps the priest. Later that year, on September 4, he was ordained as a priest. This ordination was done by Bishop Harry S. Kennedy of Hawaii.

His Work as a Minister

After becoming a priest, Richard Chang began his work in churches. He first served as an assistant at Holy Nativity Church in Honolulu.

In 1970, he moved to All Saints' Church in Kapaa, Hawaii. He was the rector there until 1978. A rector is the main priest in charge of a church. During this time, he also served as the Archdeacon of Hawaii from 1970 to 1974. An archdeacon helps the bishop manage the church's affairs.

In 1979, he became an executive officer for the Diocese of Hawaii. This meant he helped run the church's operations in the region.

Moving to New York

In 1986, Richard Chang moved to New York City. He took on a big role there as the Chief Operations Officer of the Episcopal Church Centre. He also worked as an assistant to the Presiding Bishop, Edmond L. Browning. The Presiding Bishop is the main leader of the Episcopal Church in the United States. He also became an honorary canon of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Paris.

Becoming a Bishop

On June 29, 1995, Richard Chang was chosen to be the Bishop of Hawaii. This happened during a special meeting at St Andrew's Cathedral in Honolulu.

He officially became the Bishop of Hawaii on January 4, 1997. Presiding Bishop Edmond L. Browning led this special ceremony. Bishop Chang retired from his role in 2006. He passed away on August 30, 2017, in Honolulu after an illness.
