Early Life and Family

Richard Warde was the son of Thomas Warde. His father, Thomas, had important jobs at Windsor Castle. He was the Porter (meaning he managed the castle gates), the Controller of the Works (he oversaw building projects), and the Keeper of the Armoury (he looked after the weapons).

Richard's mother was Maud, whose father was Thomas Moore from Bourton in Buckinghamshire. Richard followed in his father's footsteps, taking on roles that served the royal family.

Working for the Queen

Richard Warde had a busy career working for the English Crown. In 1571, during the reign of Elizabeth I of England, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Berkshire. This happened with the help of Henry Norris, 1st Baron Norreys.

He also served as a Member of Parliament for Windsor several times. Besides being an MP, he held key positions in the Royal Household. He was the Cofferer, which meant he managed the royal family's money and expenses. He was also the Clerk of the Green Cloth, another role involved in managing the royal household's daily operations.

Like his father, Richard was the Keeper of Cranbourne Lodge. This was an important royal residence and hunting lodge.

His Family and Home

Sir Richard Warde married a woman named Colubria. She was the daughter of William Flambert from Chertsey in Surrey. Together, they had a very large family with seventeen children!

Sir Richard and Colubria lived at Hurst House in Berkshire. Sir Richard Warde passed away on 11 February 1578. He is remembered today by a special memorial brass in Hurst Church. He was also the great-grandfather of another Member of Parliament, Richard Harrison.
