Richard Whitehead Young (born April 19, 1858 – died December 27, 1919) was an important American military leader. He became a Brigadier General in the United States Army. He also served as a judge on the Supreme Court of the Philippines. This was during a time when the Philippines was a U.S. Territory.

Early Life and Education

Richard Whitehead Young was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1858. His father was Joseph A. Young, and his mother was Margaret Whitehead. Richard's grandfather was Brigham Young, a famous leader.

Growing Up in Salt Lake City

Young spent his early years in Salt Lake City. He lived in the Beehive House and the Lion House. He also lived in a house near where the Joseph Smith Memorial Building is today. As a teenager, he studied at the University of Deseret.

Becoming a Teacher and Student

After college, Young worked as a teacher and a principal in Manti, Utah. He also worked for the architect's office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Young was good friends with Heber J. Grant. Grant said Young was one of the most honest people he knew.

Studying Law and Military Service

Young wanted to study architecture in the eastern United States. He hoped his grandfather, Brigham Young, would help him. He dreamed of helping to build many temples for his church.

In 1878, Young joined West Point. This is a famous military school. He graduated in 1882, ranking 15th in his class. He became an officer in the field artillery. After West Point, he married Minerva Richards in Utah. Then, they moved to New York City. Young was stationed at Fort Columbus.

In 1884, Young earned a law degree from Columbia Law School. He worked as a military lawyer until 1888. Then, he moved back to Salt Lake City to start his own law practice. He left the army the next year.

Military Career and Public Service

Richard W. Young had an impressive career in both the military and law. He served his country in several important roles.

Leading Troops in the Philippines

From 1895 to 1896, Young was a brigadier general in the National Guard. He rejoined the army during the Spanish–American War. He led the Utah Light Artillery Battalion in the Philippines.

Serving as a Judge

After the war, Young was chosen for a special job. He became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in the U.S. Territory of the Philippines. He served as a judge until 1901. Then, he returned to his private law practice. He worked as a lawyer for the Idaho Sugar Company. This company later became the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company.

World War I Service

In 1917, Young rejoined the army again. He became a colonel of the 145th Field Artillery Regiment. In 1918, he was promoted to brigadier general. He commanded the 65th Field Artillery Brigade in France during World War I.

Personal Life and Legacy

Richard Whitehead Young passed away in 1919. He left behind a legacy of service.

Family Connections

Young married Minerva Richards. Her father was Henry Phinehas Richards. Richard and Minerva were distant cousins. They both shared an ancestor named Phineas Howe.

Young's daughter, also named Minerva, married Adam S. Bennion.

Later Years and Burial

Young died in 1919 from appendicitis. He was buried at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
