Who is Richelle Montoya?
Early Life and Family
Richelle Montoya grew up in Torreon, Sandoval County, New Mexico. Her family background is deeply rooted in Navajo traditions. She belongs to the Hashtł'ishnii (Mud clan) and was born for the Ta'neeszahnii (Tangle clan). In Navajo culture, clans are like large family groups that connect people to their ancestors and relatives. Her maternal grandfather is from the Kinłichii'nii (Red House clan), and her paternal grandfather is from the Táchii'nii (Red Running into Water clan).
Community Leadership
Before becoming Vice President, Richelle Montoya was a strong leader in her local community. She served as the president of the Torreon/Star Lake Chapter. A Chapter is a local government unit within the Navajo Nation, similar to a town council. She was also a member of the Na’ Neelzhiin Ji Olta’ Inc. board, showing her dedication to community organizations.

Becoming Vice President
In August 2022, Richelle Montoya was chosen by Buu Nygren to be his running mate for the 2022 Navajo Nation presidential election. Together, they ran for the top leadership positions in the Navajo Nation. They won the election, and Richelle Montoya officially began her term as Vice President on January 10, 2023.
