Richeza of Poland: A Royal Story
Her Family and Early Life
Richeza was born into a powerful royal family. Her father was King Mieszko II Lambert of Poland. Her mother was Richeza of Lotharingia. Her mother was also the granddaughter of a very important ruler, Emperor Otto II.
Even though she is usually called Richeza today, some old records do not clearly show this name. Historians now think her real name might have been Adelaide.
Becoming Queen of Hungary
Between the years 1039 and 1043, Richeza married Béla. Béla was a brave leader who had served her father, the King of Poland. He even helped her father in battles against tribes in a region called Pomerania.
In 1048, Béla received a large part of Hungary from his brother, King Andrew I of Hungary. This part was like a special region given to him to rule. Richeza and Béla then moved to Hungary.
Later, on December 6, 1060, her husband Béla became the King of Hungary. He was crowned after winning a fight against his brother. This made Richeza the Queen of Hungary.
Her Children
Richeza and King Béla I had several children who grew up to be important figures themselves:
- King Géza I of Hungary (born around 1040, died 1077)
- King Ladislaus I of Hungary (born around 1040, died 1095)
- Duke Lampert of Hungary (born after 1050, died around 1095)
- Sophia (born after 1050, died 1095). She married two important dukes.
- Euphemia (born after 1050, died 1111). She married Prince Otto I of Olomouc.
- Helen of Hungary (born after 1050, died around 1091). She became the Queen of Croatia by marrying King Demetrius Zvonimir of Croatia.
