The Richmond Historic District is a special area in the heart of Richmond, Maine. It shows off the town's rich history. Richmond became a busy place in the 1600s. It grew into a major shipbuilding center in the 1800s. This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.

What is the Richmond Historic District?
The Richmond Historic District covers the old village center. It includes streets like Kimball Street, High Street, and South Street. The Kennebec River forms its eastern border. This area has many old buildings. They show what the town looked like long ago.
How Did Richmond Begin?
Richmond's story started in 1649. That's when land was bought from Native Americans. Later, in 1719, a fort was built here. It helped protect the early settlers. This fort was later moved further up the Kennebec River. Richmond became its own town in 1823. Before that, it was part of Bowdoinham.
Richmond's Shipbuilding History
The 1800s were a very important time for Richmond. It became a huge center for building ships. Between 1815 and 1890, over 200 ships were built here! This made the town very successful. Even though the shipyards are gone, many old buildings remain. They remind us of this busy time.

The historic district has many interesting buildings. They show different styles of architecture.
Main Street and River Street
You can find shops and businesses on Main Street. This street runs towards the river. On River Street, there are some beautiful brick buildings. These were important commercial spots.
Famous Historic Buildings
- Hathorn Block: This four-story building was built in 1850. It shows the Greek Revival architecture style. A shipbuilder named Jefferson Hathorn built it.
- Southard Block: Built in 1882, this building is also on River Street. It was built by T.J. Southard. He was a leading shipbuilder in Richmond.
- T.J. Southard House: Southard's own house was built in 1855. It's a great example of Italianate architecture. It's considered one of the best in Maine.
