History of the Richter Brewery
How the Brewery Started
The Richter Brewing Company began in Escanaba in 1901. They quickly hired a company from Milwaukee to design their building. The brewery was built between 1900 and 1901. It started making drinks in early 1901. Building and equipping the brewery cost about $40,000. It was the second brewery ever in Escanaba.
Changes Over Time
Over the next few years, more buildings were added. These included a keg house, an office, a bottling plant, an ice house, and a stable. Most of these extra buildings were taken down in 1929. Only the office building from 1915 remained.
The brewery stopped making drinks when the Prohibition period began. During Prohibition, it was not allowed to make or sell certain types of drinks. The building was sold in 1925. After that, it was used to make non-alcoholic drinks.
After Prohibition
When Prohibition ended, the building was sold again. The Delta Brewery Company bought it. The building was used to make drinks once more. However, the Delta Brewing Company closed down in 1940.
The building was empty for many years after that. It stayed vacant until the late 2000s.
Modern Renovation
In 2008, someone bought the building. Their plan was to turn it into apartments. The building was changed into fifteen loft apartments. It also had three spaces on the ground floor for businesses. By early 2012, the renovation was almost finished. Many apartments were rented, and one business space was filled.
