Rick Camp's Baseball Career
Rick Camp was born in Trion, Georgia. He became a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves and played for them for nine seasons. His career spanned from 1976 to 1985.
A Memorable Home Run
Rick Camp is especially remembered for a very unusual moment in his career. It happened during a game that started on July 4, 1985. The Braves were playing against the New York Mets. The game went on for a very long time, into extra innings.
In the 18th inning, with two outs, Rick Camp stepped up to bat. He was a pitcher, not known for hitting home runs. In fact, he had never hit one in his entire professional career! But in this game, he hit a home run that tied the score. This was the only home run he ever hit in his nine seasons in Major League Baseball.
The game was incredibly long. It started in the evening on July 4th and did not finish until almost 4:00 AM on July 5th! There were also three long rain delays during the game. It was one of the longest games in baseball history.
Later Life
Rick Camp passed away on April 25, 2013, at his home. He was 59 years old.
