Making Music: Rico's Journey
Starting Out in Music
In 2004, Rico Beats was in college. He decided he wanted to become a music producer. He heard a song called "Bang Bang" by Young Buck. It was produced by Needlz.
Rico really liked Needlz's work. He found out they had a friend in common. This friend helped them meet. Rico looked up to Needlz a lot. He even bought the same music equipment. He wanted to make sounds like Needlz.
Needlz used a program called Logic at that time. Rico saw how successful Needlz was with it. But Rico felt it took too long to make a beat there. So, he decided to try something different. He started using Ableton. Most other producers used Fruity Loops or Logic Pro. Rico wanted to stand out.
Producing Hit Songs
In 2010, Rico produced "Mean Mug." This song was on Soulja Boy's album, The DeAndre Way. Rico had wanted to work on Nicki Minaj's first album. But he was busy with Soulja Boy.
Later, Nicki Minaj's manager called Rico. They were working on her second album. It was called Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Rico didn't have any beats ready. He quickly made fifty beats in a month. Nicki Minaj chose one of them. It became the song "Roman Reloaded."
In January 2012, Rico was in a studio in Los Angeles. He was trying to get more music on Nicki's album. She came to the studio. She played a short part of "Roman Reloaded." The song was not finished yet. The full song came out on February 24.
Working with Pusha T
In 2013, Rico produced "Exodus 23:1" for Pusha T. This song got a lot of attention. It was a song that talked about other artists. Rico told MTV News that they were just focused on making good music.
He said that Dream and Pusha T were in the studio. They were just focused on creating. Pusha T wanted a "dark" sound for his album. Rico went to his studio. He listened to music by Biggie. This helped him create the beat.
Future Projects
Rico Beats has also produced two songs for Jadakiss. One of these songs will feature the rapper Jeezy. Rico is also working with other famous artists. These include Sean Kingston, Fabolous, Jay Z, and Jennifer Lopez. Jennifer Lopez even picked one of his beats. She is still deciding what to do with it.
