Frisco RoughRiders (TL/Double-A Central) 2003–present

Riders Field is a cool baseball park located in Frisco, Texas. It's the home field for the Frisco RoughRiders, a Double-A team in the Texas League. The ballpark first opened its doors on April 3, 2003, and can hold over 10,000 fans!

Even though it's mostly for baseball games, Riders Field also hosts high school and college baseball tournaments. Plus, it's a popular spot for other fun public and private events all year long. This stadium has even hosted three Texas League All-Star Games.

Since it opened, Riders Field has won awards and lots of praise for its special design and awesome features. The architect, David M. Schwarz, wanted to create a "park within a park" that felt like a small village. In 2003, it won the Texas Construction Award for Best Architectural Design.

Fans love coming to RoughRiders games here! The attendance at Riders Field has almost always been the highest or second highest in the Texas League and for all Double-A teams since it opened. Since 2005, it has held the top spot for attendance in its league and classification.

How Riders Field Started

Building a New Home for Baseball

Back in 2001, a company called Mandalay Sports Entertainment owned a Double-A baseball team called the Shreveport SwampDragons. They decided to move the team to Frisco, Texas, for the 2003 season. As part of this plan, a new ballpark needed to be built in Frisco.

The project began on February 6, 2002. It was designed by two companies: David M. Schwarz Architectural Services and HKS Sports & Entertainment Group.

The ballpark was planned to be the main attraction of a huge 74-acre development project. This big project cost about $300 million and was near State Highway 121 and the Dallas North Tollway. The city of Frisco and Southwest Sports Group worked together to pay for it. Frisco contributed $67 million, which came from special funding, not from regular city taxes.

The Story Behind the Name

In January 2003, a local soft-drink company, Dr Pepper/Seven Up, bought the rights to name the stadium. They called it Dr Pepper/Seven Up Ballpark for ten years, with a chance to extend it for five more. Before the 2006 season, the name was shortened to Dr Pepper Ballpark.

In August 2017, the company decided not to renew their naming agreement. The RoughRiders started looking for a new sponsor. Even though the Dr Pepper signs were still up in 2019, the team officially changed the name to Riders Field at the start of the 2021 season.

Exciting Baseball Games

The very first game at the ballpark was on April 3, 2003. The Frisco RoughRiders played against the Tulsa Drillers and lost 16–2. It was a sold-out game with 10,685 people watching! The RoughRiders got their first home win the very next day, beating the Drillers 4–3.

Riders Field has hosted the Texas League All-Star Game three times. The first was on June 21, 2005, where the West Division All-Stars won 5–0. The second was on July 1, 2009, with the North Division All-Stars winning 2–1. Most recently, on June 27, 2017, the South All-Stars beat the North All-Stars 10–3.

The ballpark has also hosted special exhibition games with Major League Baseball teams. On March 31, 2006, the Texas Rangers played the Florida Marlins. The Rangers won 4–1 in front of 10,551 fans. The Rangers returned on March 29, 2008, to play against their own Double-A team, the Frisco RoughRiders. This time, the minor league team surprised everyone by winning 7–2!

More Than Just Baseball

Riders Field isn't just for the Frisco RoughRiders! Since 2004, it has hosted the Tournament of Champions, a big high school baseball tournament. In 2017, it also started hosting the Frisco College Baseball Classic for college teams.

Since baseball isn't played all year, the stadium is used for many other events. Companies hold softball games and movie nights here. Local charities use it for events like 5K runs and bike races. Every January since 2006, the stadium has been the starting point for the annual TXU Energy Winter Games of Texas. You can even have wedding receptions, church services, and other city events at Riders Field!

Cool Features of the Ballpark

Unique Design and Look

The special design of Riders Field was led by David M. Schwarz. He wanted to create a "park within a park." To do this, the stadium has nine separate buildings connected together. These buildings hold things like food stands, restrooms, and fancy suites. They are built separately from the main seating area.

This design helps air flow better, which is great for the Texas heat! The wind can move through the buildings, keeping things cooler. People have said the design makes the ballpark feel like a coastal town or even like Churchill Downs in Kentucky.

After it was built in 2003, Riders Field won the Texas Construction award for Best Architectural Design. It was also named the best new ballpark in the country by BaseballParks.com!

Where Fans Sit

The stadium has 7,748 regular seats that fold down. If you add standing room and grass areas, the ballpark can hold up to 10,216 people. There's a walkway that goes all the way around the ballpark, so fans can walk around and see the game from every angle!

There are also 26 luxury suites on the second level. These suites have balconies to watch the game and TVs to catch all the action. The areas where the pitchers warm up (called bullpens) are built right into the stands along the first and third base lines. In the outfield, you can even sit on the grass! This area used to be called "San Juan Hill" but is now known as "The Lawn."

The ballpark also has special areas for groups, like covered party decks and meeting spaces.

Splash into the Lazy River!

One of the coolest and most unique features of Riders Field is its lazy river! It used to be a swimming pool, but in 2016, it was changed into a lazy river water ride. This lazy river holds 68,000 gallons of water and is a 174-foot-long loop. A full trip around the course is about 400 feet!

You can buy tickets to access the lazy river during Sunday games, and it's open to all ages. On Thursdays, it's reserved for adults aged 21 and older. For other games, groups of 25 to 200 people can rent it out. It's a super fun way to watch a baseball game!

Fan Fun and Attendance Records

Riders Field has always been a popular place for baseball fans. In its first two seasons (2003 and 2004), it was the second most-attended stadium in the Texas League and for all Double-A teams. Since 2005, it has been the number one stadium for attendance!

The record for the most people at a single game was set on July 3, 2025. A whopping 12,081 fans watched the RoughRiders play the Arkansas Travelers that night! The stadium's record for total attendance in a season was 666,977 fans in its first year, 2003. That same year, it also set the record for average attendance with 9,394 fans per game.
