Riel is a special area in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where people vote for their representative in the provincial government. This area is called an "electoral division" or "riding." It was created in 1968 and first used in the provincial election of 1969.

Riel is located in the south-central part of Winnipeg, which is Manitoba's capital and largest city. It is named after Louis Riel, a very important leader in Manitoba's history, known for leading the 1870 Red River Rebellion.

The Riel area has specific borders. To the south, it's next to Seine River. To the east and north, it borders St. Vital. To the west, it's across the Red River of the North from Fort Garry and Fort Richmond.

In 1996, about 20,228 people lived in Riel. Most families in this area are considered middle-class or upper middle-class. In 1999, the average family income was about $63,126. About nine percent of the people living in Riel speak French.

Many jobs in Riel are in the service industry, which makes up about 15% of the area's economy. Health and social services are also important, making up about 12.5% of the jobs.

Riel has often been represented by politicians from the Progressive Conservative Party (PC). Sometimes, it has been represented by the New Democratic Party (NDP). The person representing Riel right now is Rochelle Squires from the Progressive Conservative Party.
