History of the Bartholomew House
Building a New Home in Richfield
In 1852, a large area of land became open for people to settle. This land would later become the city of Richfield. Riley Bartholomew arrived in this area and chose a spot near Wood Lake. He started building his house there.
He built the main two-story part of the house using wood from the local area. The floors were made from strong white pine wood. In the spring of 1853, his wife, Fanny, and their two children joined him in their new home.
Soon after the main house was built, two more sections were added. These were smaller, single-story buildings that were moved from near Minnehaha Falls and attached to the main house.
Riley Bartholomew's Public Service
Riley Bartholomew became a very important person in local government. He was part of the Republican Constitutional Convention in 1857. This group helped write the Minnesota Constitution, which is like the rulebook for the state of Minnesota.
He also served as a representative for District Four in the Minnesota Senate. This meant he helped make laws for the state. Before moving to Minnesota, Riley Bartholomew had been a general in the Ohio militia, which was a group of citizen soldiers.
Later, he also joined a group of volunteers during the Dakota War of 1862. This was a conflict that happened in Minnesota.
