Rinchinbal (born May 1, 1326 – died December 14, 1332) was a young boy who became an emperor of the Yuan dynasty in China. He is also known by his temple name, Emperor Ningzong of Yuan. Rinchinbal was the son of Emperor Mingzong. He was also considered the 14th Khagan (Great Khan) of the Mongol Empire. However, by his time, the Mongol Empire had already split into different parts.
A Royal Family and Early Life
Rinchinbal was the second son of Kuśala, who was also known as Emperor Mingzong. His older brother was Toghun Temür, who later became Emperor Huizong. Rinchinbal's mother was named Babusha. She belonged to the Naiman tribe. She met Kuśala when he was living away from home in Central Asia.
The Path to the Throne
After Rinchinbal's father, Kuśala, passed away, his uncle Tugh Temür became the emperor. Some people believed that Tugh Temür might have been involved in his brother's death. Tugh Temür first chose his own son, Aratnadara, to be the next ruler. To make sure her son would be safe on the throne, Tugh Temür's wife, Budashiri, took action. She had Rinchinbal's mother, Babusha, executed. She also sent Rinchinbal's older brother, Toghan Temür, far away to Korea. However, Aratnadara died just one month after being named the next ruler.
When Tugh Temür died in 1332, he had a son named El Tegüs. But it is said that before he died, Tugh Temür felt bad about what had happened to his older brother, Kuśala. He wanted Kuśala's oldest son, Toghan Temür, to become emperor instead of his own son.
The powerful official El Temür did not want Toghan Temür to become emperor. He suspected Toghan Temür might have been involved in his father Kuśala's death. But Tugh Temür's widow, Budashiri, respected her late husband's wish. She wanted one of Kuśala's sons to rule.
Since Toghan Temür was still far away, the six-year-old Rinchinbal was chosen. He was already in the capital city, Dadu, and Tugh Temür had liked him. Rinchinbal became the new emperor on October 23, 1332. Sadly, he died very soon after, on December 14, 1332.
After Rinchinbal's death, El Temür again asked Budashiri to make El Tegüs emperor, but she refused. So, El Temür had no choice but to bring Toghan Temür back from far-off Guangxi in southwest China.
