China was once ruled by powerful leaders called emperors. These emperors were in charge of the country for many centuries, from 221 BC (which means "Before Christ") all the way to AD 1911 (which means "Anno Domini," or "in the year of the Lord"). In Chinese, these rulers were called huangdi. Most of them were men, but there was one amazing woman, Wu Zetian, who also ruled as an empress.
