Ring Creek facts for kids
Ring Creek is a small waterway, also called a creek, in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It flows towards the west and southwest, eventually joining the Mamquam River. It's also located east of the Squamish River.
A unique community called Ring Creek is found about 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) east of Quest University. It sits high up, about 2000 feet (610 meters) above sea level, on the Garibaldi Park Road. Even though it's close to the town of Squamish, it's not part of the town itself. It's in a larger area called the Squamish Lillooet Regional District (SLRD).
About 40 to 60 people live in the Ring Creek community. Some live there all year, while others stay for just part of the year. What makes this community special is that it's completely "off-grid." This means homes here don't get their water, electricity, or other services from a central company. Residents find their own ways to get water, power, and handle waste.
How the Ring Creek Community Started
The Ring Creek community began because of logging in the area. When roads were built for logging trucks, people started using them to visit Garibaldi Park for fun. Some people even built small cabins without official permission.
In the late 1960s, the government looked at the land and offered special agreements called "crown leases" to those living there. This meant people could use the land if they followed certain rules and paid a yearly fee. Later, as governments changed, these leases were offered for sale as "freehold properties." This means people could buy the land outright and own it completely.
Today, most of the land in Ring Creek has been bought as freehold property. However, over the last 35 years, some properties have gone back to the government, and a few are still under the original crown lease agreements.
Mountain Biking Fun
The Ring Creek area is very popular with mountain bikers. It's located among some of the best and most used mountain bike trails in the "Sea to Sky Corridor." This corridor is a famous area for outdoor sports between Vancouver and Whistler.
