Rioja style potatoes facts for kids
Riojan Style Potatoes or Patatas a la Riojana is a yummy potato dish from Spain. It's super popular in the Rioja and Álava areas, which are part of the Basque region. This tasty stew is made with potatoes, bell peppers, and chorizo sausage. The sauce gets thick and creamy from the potato starch. Sometimes, people add other things like bay leaves, pimenton (a type of paprika), or mushrooms.
History of Riojan Potatoes
It's not clear exactly when Riojan Style Potatoes were first made. However, potatoes were not often used in soups in Spain until Napoleon's army invaded. This means the dish probably became popular in the 1800s or later.
A famous chef named Paul Bocuse once tried this stew at a winery. He loved it so much that he ate three servings! He even said that Riojan Style Potatoes were the best food he had ever tasted. Chef Bocuse also suggested that this dish should be the national dish of Spain. Today, you can still find Riojan Style Potatoes served often in the Alava and Rioja regions.
