Rison is a small, quiet community in Charles County, Maryland, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Even though Rison had its own post office back in 1905, people living there today use the zip code for nearby Indian Head.
Rison is located about 50 feet above sea level. In 1941, only about 50 people lived there. This area is full of history and natural beauty, with parks and old landmarks that tell stories from long ago.

Exploring Rison's History
Rison has some interesting connections to the past, especially to important events in American history.
Revolutionary War Connections
One of the most famous people linked to Rison is General William Smallwood. He was a brave leader during the American Revolutionary War, which was when the United States fought for its freedom. His old home is now part of Smallwood State Park. You can find this park right along the Mattawoman Creek in Rison.
Historic Waterways and Ports
Long ago, rivers and creeks were like highways for travel and trade. Rison was once home to a busy spot called Grinder's Wharf. In the mid-1800s, this wharf was a lively port where steamships from the Washington Steamship Lines would dock. It was an important place for moving goods and people. Today, you can find the site of this historic wharf off Upham Road in Rison.
Fishing and Recreation at Sweden Point Marina
Inside Smallwood State Park, you'll also find Sweden Point Marina. This marina is a popular spot for fishing, and it even hosts big fishing tournaments. It used to be known by a different name, Sweetman's Landing. It's a great place for people who love to spend time outdoors and enjoy the water.
Growth of Residential Areas
Over the years, Rison has seen some new neighborhoods built. For example, the Rison Acres subdivision was planned and developed in 1973. Around the same time, another nearby neighborhood called Smallwood Estates was also created. These areas provide homes for families in the community.
The Story of Linkins Road
Rison is also connected to the story of Robert Linkins. He was born in Rison and, from 1955 to 2000, he ran a unique one-person sawmill there. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber. The dirt road that led to his sawmill is now an official road called Linkins Road, which is part of Maryland State Route 224. Robert Linkins passed away in 2008, but his legacy lives on through the road named after him.
