Rita is a special area called a district in Costa Rica. It's part of the Pococí canton, which is like a county, and it's located in the Limón province.

History of Rita

Rita became its own district on July 2, 1971. Before that, it was part of another district called Guápiles. A special government rule, called a "Decreto Ejecutivo," made Rita a separate area.

Geography and Location

Rita covers an area of about 502 square kilometers (194 square miles). It is mostly flat land, with an average height of 111 meters (364 feet) above sea level.

Rita is located in the northeastern part of Costa Rica. It shares borders with other districts:

  • To the north: Colorado
  • To the south: Guápiles
  • To the east: Cariari
  • To the west: The province of Heredia

The main village in Rita, called La Rita, is about 9.6 kilometers (6 miles) north of Guápiles. It's also about 74.9 kilometers (46.5 miles) northeast of San José, which is the capital city of Costa Rica.
