María Rita Barberá Nolla (16 July 1948 – 23 November 2016) was an important Spanish politician. She served as the mayor of Valencia, a major city in Spain, for many years. She was mayor from 1991 until 2015.

Rita Barberá's Early Life and Career
Rita Barberá was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1948. Her family was well-known in the city, with connections to industry and politics. From a young age, she was interested in public service and how cities are run.
She became a member of the People's Party of Spain. This is one of the biggest political parties in the country. She was also a representative in the Valencian regional Parliament, called the Corts Valencianes. This means she helped make laws and decisions for the Valencia region.
Serving as Mayor of Valencia
Rita Barberá was first elected mayor of Valencia in 1991. She held this important job for 24 years, making her one of the longest-serving mayors in Spain. During her time as mayor, she worked on many projects to improve the city.
After the local elections in 2015, she was no longer the mayor. However, her party then chose her to become a Spanish Senator. A senator is a national politician who helps make laws for the whole country. As a senator, she worked in the Spanish Parliament in Madrid.
Later Years and Passing
