Who is Rita Maestre?

Early Life and Education

Rita Maestre was born in Madrid, Spain, on April 13, 1988. She grew up in the Ventas neighborhood of the city. Her parents worked for the government. Her father worked for the Tax Agency, and her mother worked for the City Council.

She studied political science at the Complutense University of Madrid. After that, she continued her studies in International Economy. This helped her understand how countries work together in terms of money and trade.

Early Political Involvement

Rita Maestre became involved in politics at a young age. In 2011, she helped start a group called Juventud sin Futuro, which means "Youth Without a Future." She also took part in the 15-M protests. These were large demonstrations in Spain where people protested against economic problems.

She also worked with a TV show called LaTuerka. Later, she joined the political party Podemos. She helped with their campaign for the 2014 European Parliament election.

Joining Podemos and City Council

After a big meeting of the Podemos party in October 2014, Rita Maestre became a member of their Citizen Council. This council helps guide the party's decisions.

In May 2015, she ran for election to the Madrid City Council. She was on the Ahora Madrid list and was elected as a city councillor.

Rita Maestre's Role in Madrid City Government

Spokesperson for Madrid

On June 13, 2015, Manuela Carmena became the new Mayor of Madrid. Rita Maestre was chosen to be part of the city government team. She became the spokesperson for the government. She also briefly served as the councillor-president for the Salamanca district. This meant she was in charge of local government matters in that area.

Political Challenges and Changes

Rita Maestre faced some challenges during her time in office. In 2016, she was involved in a legal case related to a protest she took part in back in 2011. She was later found not guilty.

She also ran for a leadership position within the regional branch of Podemos in Madrid. However, she did not win that election.

Later, in 2018, Rita Maestre and other councillors decided to join a new political platform called Más Madrid. This platform was formed around Manuela Carmena. Because of this, their membership in Podemos was temporarily suspended.

Rita Maestre's Current Role

Leading the Opposition

In May 2019, Rita Maestre ran for the Madrid City Council again with the Más Madrid party. She was elected. Even though Más Madrid won the most votes, Manuela Carmena could not continue as mayor. Other parties formed a coalition government.

After Manuela Carmena left public life, Rita Maestre became the leader of Más Madrid in the City Council. She won an election against Marta Higueras to become the spokesperson. In this role, she leads the opposition to the current mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.

In May 2023, Rita Maestre ran as the candidate for mayor of Madrid for the Más Madrid party.
