The River Bride is a cool river in Dorset, England. It flows between the towns of Dorchester and Bridport. This river is about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) long. It drains an area of about 15 square miles (39 sq km).

The River Bride starts high up, about 90 meters (300 feet) above sea level. It begins near a special lake at Bridehead House in Littlebredy. From there, it flows west until it reaches the English Channel. It meets the sea near Burton Bradstock.

The river has nine smaller streams that join it along its journey. It drops more than 60 meters (200 feet) in height during its first three miles! When it reaches the coast, it flows through a gap in the cliffs at Burton Freshwater. Here, it meets the western end of Chesil Beach. The river then forms a pool and tries to reach the sea before its water sinks into the shingle.

What's in a Name?

The name of the River Bride comes from an old language called Celtic. It comes from the Old Welsh word Brydi. This word is related to the Cornish word bredion, which means "to boil." So, the river's name means "boiling" or "gushing" stream.

The river has given its name to several nearby places. These include Long Bredy, Littlebredy, and Burton Bradstock. It probably also gave its name to the town of Bridport.
