River Brora near West Langwell

The River Brora is a river in the Highlands of Scotland. It flows towards the east. This river is found in a beautiful area called Sutherland. The name "Brora" comes from the Scottish Gaelic word Brùra.

The River Brora: A Journey to the Sea

The River Brora begins its journey when three smaller streams meet. These streams are called the Féith Osdail, Allt Gobhlach, and Allt nan Con-uisge. They all join together at a place named Dalnessie. From there, the river starts flowing towards the southeast. It travels through a valley known as Strath Brora. This part of its journey ends at Dalreavoch.

How the River Flows

After Dalreavoch, the River Brora changes direction. It briefly turns towards the northeast. Then, it flows directly east for a short distance. After that, it turns southeast again. The river then passes through three different parts of Loch Brora. A loch is a Scottish word for a lake.

Where the River Ends

Finally, the River Brora reaches the Moray Firth. This is a large bay that is part of the North Sea. The river meets the sea at the town of Brora. This town is also named after the river.

The Black Water Tributary

The River Brora has one main helper river. This helper is called the Black Water. A helper river is also known as a tributary. The Black Water joins the River Brora on its left side. This happens near a place called Balnacoil.

Feeder Streams of the Black Water

The Black Water itself gets its water from other streams. These streams are the River Skinsdale and the Coirefrois Burn. They help to fill the Black Water. This shows how many rivers and streams connect to each other. They all work together to create a larger river system.
