River system River Yare

The River Chet is a small but important river in South Norfolk, England. It is a tributary of the larger River Yare. This means the Chet flows into the Yare, adding its water to it.

Where the River Chet Flows

The River Chet begins its journey in a place called Poringland. From there, it flows towards the east. As it travels, the river passes through several villages and towns. These include Alpington, Bergh Apton, Thurton, and Loddon.

Passing Through Loddon

When the River Chet reaches Loddon, it goes under the A146 highway. It then flows past Loddon Mill and into an area called Loddon Staithe. A "staithe" is a place where boats can dock. From Loddon Staithe onwards, the river is wide enough and deep enough for boats to travel on it. This part of the river is about 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) long.

Joining the River Yare

Further along its path, the River Chet flows past Hardley Flood to the north. Hardley Flood is a special nature reserve. It is looked after by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, which helps protect the plants and animals there.

Finally, the River Chet meets the River Yare. This meeting point is about one mile (1.6 kilometers) west of Reedham. At this spot, you can see a stone marker called Hardley Cross. This cross was put there in 1676. It marks an old boundary line between the City of Norwich and the Borough of Great Yarmouth.

Fun Facts About the River Chet

The River Chet is a great place for outdoor activities.

Fishing on the Chet

If you enjoy fishing, you can cast your line in the River Chet. Fishing is allowed in the section between Loddon and Hardley Cross. The most common types of fish you might catch here are bream and roach.
