River mouth confluence with River Eden

The River Eamont is a cool river in Cumbria, England. It is one of the main rivers that flows into the bigger River Eden. The name "Eamont" comes from an old English word. It means "where streams meet." This name came from Eamont Bridge, a famous crossing point.

Where the Eamont River Flows

The River Eamont starts its journey from Ullswater. This is a large lake located in the beautiful Lake District. As it flows, other streams join it, making it bigger.

Rivers Joining the Eamont

  • Dacre Beck: This stream flows into the Eamont from the west side.
  • River Lowther: This river brings water from Haweswater. It joins the Eamont near Penrith.

The Eamont then travels about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) east of Penrith. Here, it meets and joins the River Eden.

Flooding and Bridges

The River Eamont has flooded many times over the years. One of the biggest floods happened in December 2015. This was during a huge storm called Storm Desmond.

Pooley Bridge Washed Away

During Storm Desmond, the old Pooley Bridge was destroyed. This bridge was over 300 years old! It connected two parts of a village. A temporary bridge had to be built quickly. This helped people cross the river again. Work began in 2019 to build a brand new bridge. It was planned to be finished by Easter 2020.

Eamont Bridge Damage

The same storm also damaged another important bridge. This was the Eamont Bridge, which is a very old and special building. Luckily, after some repair work, it reopened in March 2016.

Amazing Animals in the Eamont

The River Eamont is a special place for some amazing creatures. It is home to the endangered white-clawed crayfish. These small animals are important for the river's ecosystem. They are a type of freshwater crayfish.
